The Modern Spectator is a literary sports journal. It takes a broad look at our culture by focusing on the games we watch and play.
Here you’ll find belated news, occasional reviews, selected poems, perhaps some fiction, and, always, profound essays on the history and future of sports and society.

Founder, Editor at Large
Austin Kelley
 has written for many publications including The New York TimesThe New Yorker, and Slate. He teaches at NYU and is working on a novel. From his Brooklyn home, Austin roots for the Eagles, the Flyers, the Sixers, the Phillies, Villanova, and Arsenal. He also enjoys a good game of bocce and small-wave surfing. Contact Austin.

Matt Nicholas hails from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and so is plagued with divided loyalties to Wisconsin and Michigan teams. He studied literature for a really long time and now teaches writing.

Noah Cohan is from Seattle and once loved football. He concerns himself with sports fans in endeavors professional and personal. He is fond of Gary Payton and teams that wear purple.

Katie Muth teaches contemporary literature and culture in the United Kingdom, where from time to time she crawls out of bed at odd hours to consume American sporting events.

Emily Thompson is an artist and floral designer. Her company Emily Thompson Flowers has been featured in The New York Times, Martha Stewart Living, and Vogue. She is married to Austin Kelley and therefore subjected to all kinds of sports.

Brian Schwartz lives in Brooklyn, but spends a lot of time at N.Y.U., where he’s a teacher in the Expository Writing Program and a student in the English Education program. He has an MFA in creative writing from U.C. Irvine, and his fiction has appeared recently in Washington Square and The Seattle Review.

Tyson Smith teaches sociology at Brown University. His research focuses on culture, gender, media, and social psychology. He has a webpage and can be contacted here.

Mike Stevens, a former magazine editor and writer, is the executive director of the Moxie Cinema in Springfield, MO. He helped found The Modern Spectator. As a child, he rooted for Jose Cruz’s Astros and Earl Campbell’s Oilers. Later as a teen, he found himself more than 500 miles from any professional sports team. Consequently he’s now a fan of reference books, country music, and dining.

Dan Kaufman is a musician and writer who lives in Brooklyn, NY, with his wife and son. He leads the punk-cabaret band, BarbezHe can be reached here.

Emily Richards is a writer, editor, and cartoonist living in Ithaca, New York.
