“Among the finest in sporadically-published sports and cultural criticism.”
The Modern Spectator is a literary sports journal. It takes a broad look at our culture by focusing on the games we watch and play.
Here you’ll find belated news, occasional reviews, selected poems, perhaps some fiction, and, always, profound essays on the history and future of sports and society.

Matt Nicholas hails from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and so is plagued with divided loyalties to Wisconsin and Michigan teams. He studied literature for a really long time and now teaches writing.
Katie Muth teaches contemporary literature and culture in the United Kingdom, where from time to time she crawls out of bed at odd hours to consume American sporting events.
Emily Thompson is an artist and floral designer. Her company Emily Thompson Flowers has been featured in The New York Times, Martha Stewart Living, and Vogue. She is married to Austin Kelley and therefore subjected to all kinds of sports.
Brian Schwartz lives in Brooklyn, but spends a lot of time at N.Y.U., where he’s a teacher in the Expository Writing Program and a student in the English Education program. He has an MFA in creative writing from U.C. Irvine, and his fiction has appeared recently in Washington Square and The Seattle Review.
Mike Stevens, a former magazine editor and writer, is the executive director of the Moxie Cinema in Springfield, MO. He helped found The Modern Spectator. As a child, he rooted for Jose Cruz’s Astros and Earl Campbell’s Oilers. Later as a teen, he found himself more than 500 miles from any professional sports team. Consequently he’s now a fan of reference books, country music, and dining.
