Last Sunday’s match between AC Milan and cross town rival Internazionale was a historic occasion. Not because it was the very first Milan derby for underwear model/free-kick specialist David Beckham, but because it was the record 56th intra-city game for Italian legend Paolo Maldini. Unless he pulls a Brett Favre, it will also be his last.
Maldini is so respected that he was even honored by Inter fans, fans that are known less for showering Rossoneri players with kindness than for showering them with burning projectiles (Milan keeper Dida received first-degree burns back in a 2005 “Derby della Madonnina.”). This time, though, the Inter supports applauded their enemy captain as they unfurled a banner that read, “For 20 years our rival, but in life always loyal.” Read the rest at ESPN.
