It may be obvious to many that bribing players isn’t on the up and up, but what if you’re just bribing them to play well? The question, it seems, comes up at the end of every soccer season. Last spring it was asked in Romania when Steaua Bucharest sent agents to the town of Cluj with a suitcase filled with $2.6 million dollars, supposedly for “chocolates.” Authorities were pretty sure there were no chocolates to be found in Cluj and that Steaua was just trying to give the local university team some incentive to win the final match. The match didn’t mean much to the university team, but they were playing CFR Cluj, who would lose the Romanian title to Steaua if they lost that game. (Chocolates aside, Cluj won). Read on at ESPN.
